It is used as a solvent for food flavoring agents. It is a chiral reagent used in the synthesis of drugs, including the preparation of (-)-tarchonanthuslactone lactone compounds. (R)-1,3-Butanediol also has applications in cosmetic industry as solvent, preserving and wetting agent, and in food industry as supplement for ketogenic diet.
